Skagway II

Skagway was the starting point for the trek to the Klondike gold finds, and the White Pass train route was built because this was just not as fun as it looks:

There was tons of history and information about the gold rush and building the pass being given during the train ride, but i missed most of it because i spent pretty much the whole trip on the back platform with another shutterbug.

Did catch a few things, though.

The track is not as wide as regular track because of the terrain. The original road was pretty skinny, too. A portion of it can be seen in the middle of this picture ~~
Can you even IMAGINE making that trek? On a road that narrow?

Quiz time:  What do you see in the rock formation in the upper right hand corner?
How about this one?
Cool, huh?

All of the train cars were named after area lakes, and a couple of the original cars are still in service. Got blurry pics of those...they were in the yard and i failed to catch them as we scooted by.

The back of the cars had a little something to keep ya toasty, which was really nice to have when we got here...
But i am getting ahead of myself.

We gotta go a bit further up the pass, first, and through a tunnel or two...

They blasted tons of granite out of the mountains to put in the tracks, and it is all just sittin' there on the side of the tracks, today. Plenty of it in the ravine under the bridge, as well.

Stay tuned for more....
