Nibbles For Her Highness

Occasionally, in a kitchen that operates 24/7 like this one seems to, a goose egg is laid.

That would be a figurative goose egg, not a literal one.  The literal gooses (yes, i know it is "geese," i just prefer the funny way "gooses" sounds...it's my blog!) were run through the WBC Plucker day before yesterday, with much success.  By the way.

Back to the goose egg.

It is a well known fact in these parts that i have a thing for hummus.  Love it.  Have always loved it.  Even bad hummus is good hummus.

So when i found a recipe for a "healthy alternative to potato chips" (big neon sign, and i just whizzed on by, happily hollering "healthy snackage!!  good mommies make healthy snackage for their babies!!!"  Shudda known.)  that involved chickpeas, i was beside myself.

This recipe sounded so fabulous, that i doubled it right of the bat, because i knew that I would be able to consume that paltry little amount of my beloved chickpeas called for, and my babies would never get a chance at them.

Well.

They were a big FAT goose egg.  So bad i didn't even like them.  Each child ate one pretty little seasoned, roasted chickpea, and each child looked at me apologetically as they spit the tiny little chickpea in the trash.  I didn't blame them.  I really wanted to spit mine out, as well, but, you know, as parents, we have to set a good example, so i bravely swallowed mine.  And then drank a whole bunch of water.

Now we have the guilt associated with wasting all those lovely chickpeas.  I let them set out on the counter for about four days, hoping that someone would pass through that might find them interesting.  Where is the kid down the road that eats you out of house and home every time he comes over when you need him?

No takers.

No surprise.

Finally, i took the bowl out to my herd of pigs in goat suits, and figured this was gonna be right up their alley.  Has all the elements they love...the legume, the olive oil, the herbs and seasonings.  I mean, how could they pass all that up?  They aren't all that picky, plus, the snack is HEALTHY!!

Everyone clamored at the fence when they saw the treat bowl a'comin'.  All noses greedily grabbed for their fair share.

You could see it in their faces...."Hey!!! Someone slipped us a moldy fig, here!!"

And they politely backed away from the fence, with a "Thank you so much, but i am really stuffed right now, spent too long in the sweetgum pen eating the green grass this morning.  But thank you anyway."

HRH The Princess Gidget never joins the feeding frenzies.  Isn't proper for royalty to mix with the masses, you know.

I was standing at the fence, trying to coax one of them into eating this lovely healthy snack i had prepared, especially for them, and HRH tentatively approached the fence.  I held out a handful of chickpeas, and she daintily nibbled at each one individually.

I then held out the bowl to her, and she thrust her entire face in it and was scarfing them up like there was no tomorrow.

Ate them all, and licked the bowl.

Somewhere in that delicate royal princess suit lives a pig.

So if you ever see a recipe for healthy roasted chickpea snacks, you just go on ahead and make 'em.  If you don't like them, feel free to send them on over to Tails Up.

Gidget will eat them.
